FOOTSCRAY MENS SLEEVELESS JUMPER 1989 HERITAGE COLLECTION
The Vintage Football Jumper Company, in conjunction with Woolmark and the Western Bulldogs/Footscray Football Club, is proud to release a series of retrospective vintage jumpers 'The Heritage Collection'. In 1989, due to crippling debt, the club was given two options by the league – merge, or become extinct. For some, it was a case of accepting the inevitable; that there was no way to recover. But for countless others – whether they were in positions of influence or diehard fans from the backblocks of West Footscray, they simply wouldn’t let their football club die. What happened in the weeks following the VFL’s announcement of the supposed Fitzroy Bulldogs merger, is the stuff of legend. It was the power of the people from the West, rising up unified together to save what meant everything to them. Three decades on, the Western Bulldogs commemorate the most significant period in its history - a moment in time which paved the way for all to wear the red, white and blue with pride today.
This famous retrospective reproduction Footscray woollen jumper worn during the late-eighties pays homage to the loyal, wonderful and passionate members and fans, who rallied together to ensure the Bulldogs’ survival in the ‘Fightback of 1989’, and who still give their heart and soul to the red, white and blue to this day. As worn by celebrated and iconic Footscray names such as Hawkins, Royal, Wallace, Atkins and Wallis, this rare jumper features the authentic 0.05 sponsor woven patch synonymous with the club and VFL patch as worn in period and the merino wool in this Guernsey was grown by sheep grazing the Australian landscape, cared for by Australian farmers, and shorn and manufactured here in Australia. The jumper features a traditional collar design with woven VFL and sponsor logos on the chest and is a must-have for any Footscray tragic.
